Avoid sitting 🪑

A reminder to myself. Stand up, walk around and do not sit for too long.

Sitting is negatively impacting me both mentally and physically. It is aging me at faster rate than my non-sitting alternate-self. I used to be a semi-professional footballer. I used to move all the time, but I found myself getting injured when I started working full-time and at University. The issue doesn't seem to be age, perhaps it is related to a sedentary life. As we get older, we seem to sit for longer, especially if we have an intellectual career. I digress, to the main issue.

Stop sitting down for long periods of time!

I used to discredit the notion of getting up every 30minutes. Perhaps it is because of listening to Andrew Huberman, on having focus sessions for 90 minutes. As a programmer, that meant sitting down and staring at a screen for 90 minutes. However, after reading Deskbound, by Dr Kelly Starrett, I realise that that is not sustainable. You are better mentally if you are moving. Therefore, a "programming" session can now be coding for 30 minutes, get up and go for a walk, but THINK about the problem while you are walking. This to me, doesn't seem like task switching. You are still focused on the task at hand, you are in the same problem space. You might even arrive at the solution while you are walking, but don't rush back to the computer.

Try to stand at a desk if you can

Try standing at a desk. If you can avoid sitting, then please do. Maintain your posture and stand up.

Don't go crazy

Don't avoid sitting at all costs. You are going to have to sit down at some point, on a plane, in a car or if you live a 'Western' country, you will have to sit to shit. Don't become hyperbolic, where sitting is evil and you should never sit. It's the same as the no sugar people. You will become entranced, you will start to judge people for sitting. You will start to COMBAT sitting. Chill. Sitting isn't great, avoid it when you can, that's it.
