8 Projects with Rails 8

23 Dec 2024

The thing that attracted me to software engineering was creating something from my keyboard. It is why I made the switch from Mechatronics Engineering to Software Engineering; all you needed was a computer. However, since beginning my career, I have lost the passion for software engineering, I have created much. Therefore, I am setting myself the challenge of creating 8 applications in 8 weeks with rails 8.

As I mentioned in the summary, I am looking to reignite the spark of software engineering. I quit my software engineering job in 2023 to travel around the world.

Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia.

Fast-forward 1.5 years later and I still do not have a job in the industry. I’ve managed to travel because I have a loving and supportive partner who has taken on the financial burden. Also, thanks to Shopify, I’ve been able to pick up a lot of freelance work. I haven’t had the ambition to get hired even though having a job would be nice. Part of that reason is because I do not like the idea of being on the production line and never creating my own thing. Reading the book Career Advice For Software Engineers by Chris Vilanueva revealed that I have indeed lost the spark. It’s not the industry that is the problem, it’s that I’ve lost the drive that I once had. Therefore, I am looking to build things and I’ve taken inspiration from Pieter Levels on this, that building helps you get out of hard times.

Goal
Create 8 projects in 8 weeks with rails 8. Beginning on the 23rd of December 2024.

The tight deadline comes from Parkinson’s law

Work expands to fill the time allotted for its completion

Therefore, if I set the tight deadline, I should have 8 rails app built in 8 weeks. The blog post you are reading is one of those projects.

Project #1 is complete, assuming you are reading this on my website.
